The world’s best wines? Depends how you ask

The world’s best wines? Depends how you ask. The language of the question can result in quite different answers.

The Paris newspaper Le Figaro, concerned that its country’s producers are right to complain that their vintages are undervalued, called on ChatGPT as an independent arbiter. Not surprisingly it asked in French. And wouldn’t you know: “According to ChatGPT, the best wine in the world is French, and it is right,” the paper said. “It would not have the audacity to assert that the world’s best wine could be anything other than French.”

Le Figaro said the results would be “no great surprise” to French patriots, adding that “the wise robot showed itself to be a virtual taster”.

Ask the bot a similar question in English and the answer is different and far broader
