Forget looking for often bogus points out of a 100 or medals from shows of doubtful provenance – customers show what to buy from Glug.
The wines on the list below are our dozen biggest sellers over the last year. They are a proper guide to what people like to drink.
- Farmers and Growers The Smithy Padthaway-Barossa Valley Shiraz Durif 2021 – Padthaway is a forgotten district these days but being north of Coonawarra and warmer the Shiraz flavours are fuller and riper. Add in full flavoured Barossa Durif and you have quite a red. Our customers know the taste of quality and it is no wonder this Smithy has become our best seller. $9.30 a bottle. A steal.
- Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 – marks a return to a classical Barossa vintage after a steady, even ripening without stress on the vines. We enjoy wines like this Crayford when younger though the wine will hold up well for many years. $12.80 a bottle.
- Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 – This is the fourteenth vintage of the Goat Shiraz which we call the ‘Salt of the Earth’; a known quantity which can be relied upon to deliver a consistent view of Barossa Valley Shiraz each vintage. The Goat has the ripeness and complex flavours of the fruit complemented with only a light dose of mature oak. Our winemakerdoes not want the fruit competing with the raw flavours of new oak. $14.50 a bottle.
- Philip Schaffer The Vineyard Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV – Glug does not make sparkling wine but we find the best we can and these are presented under the Philip Schaffer brand. The number of repeat orders show people agree with our choice. $10.99 a bottle.
- The Jackman South Australia Dry Red Blend N.V. – Curently a blend of South Australia Cabernet Merlot Shiraz from different vintages. We reckon making this quaffable red is one of our finest achievements. $6 a bottle.
- Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz Durif 2021 – For decades we have noted how the Barossa brings out the best in Durif. Adding it to Shiraz creates flavours that are the best of both varieties. We know this combination has strong appeal to red wine drinkers. $12.80 a bottle.
- Andrina Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2022 – Cheating a litle putting the 2022 at number seven on our list as a lot of the Andrina Shiraz sales were of the 2021 vintage. Langhorne Creek is premium red wine country and the maker of the 2022 is the same talented winemaker as its predecessor. He has not disappointed us. $9.80 a bottle.
- Karrawirra Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018 – For the Karrawirra style we pick riper grapes and since these arrive at the winery packed with flavour we do as little as possible with the winemaking. As we prefer bigger, fruitier styles than some wineries we also do not worry about the alcohol percentage, only that the wine be in balance. $16 a bottle.
- Flocking Galloots South Australia Sauvignon Blanc 2022 – The medium sized winery we bought this wine from only squeezed the best part of the grape juice out as ‘free run’. Soft and a delight to drink. An agreeable 10.5% alc/vol. $8.60 a bottle.
- Goat Square Reserve Ziegenmarkt Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019 – Wines evolve differently in barrel, so we wait for a year or so before isolating the most promising barrels for further attention. In this way the Ziegenmarkt is born. $18.50 a bottle.
- Fareham Estate Clare Valley Riesling 2022 – The Clare makes excellent reds which are full bodied, and it is hard to comprehend how this same region can also produce Rieslings of such sublime delicacy. All I can say is that is the way it is. $14.50 a bottle.
- Parawatta Eden Valley Pinot Gris 2022 – Last but not least on our customer dozen favourites list. Imagine an elevated high, dry, plateau and you have the picture of Eden Valley.. There is no other Australian district with just these geographic features and they create quite special flavours. This Pinot Gris is a wonderful example. $11.80 a bottle.
