The first Old Moppa released was the Old Moppa Road Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache 2010.
When we arrived in the Barossa in 2004 one of many ideas was to make our wines express local, regional characters. Old Moppa road runs though vineyards in the north-east corner of the Barossa and the idea of Old Moppa is to show the tastes from this small sub-region.
Perhaps the oldest Cabernet vines in the world are up in this corner though admittedly it is a small plot. After they were planted, consumers waited a very long time before enough was planted to appear as 100% varietal. Indeed plantings did not take off until the 1980s when demand swung to Chardonnay and Cabernet. There is
ample now and Cabernet rates No 2 just behind Shiraz in consumer appeal. As always ripe Barossa warmth overrides the varietal influence.
