Goat Square is a focal point of the Barossa Valley wine industry with its history as the ziegemarkt or merket place for the whole region.
Charles Flaxman was granted land covering the future village of Tanunda on 30 th May, 1842. Flaxman worked as an agent for George Fife Angas for a number of years, surveying land acquired by Angas. Flaxman laid out the town of Tanunda. At its centre a square known as Ziegenmarkt – later referred to as billy goat square and now as Goat Square.
The two settlements pre-datimg Tanunda are Bethany (1842) and Langmeil (1843)
Goat Square was a meeting place for bartering goods including livestock. It was a short distance away from the row of ‘primitive’ wineries that opened along Langmeil Road. No doubt they traded wine.
Shiraz was one of the early varieties planted and appropriately is the flagship wine of Goat Square Vignerons. Goat Square also makes Grenache and a Shiraz Grenache Mataro.
