The Mount Eagle Range rises to the east of Keyneton an historic town dating to 1878. The Keyneton district was originally called North Rhine, an appropriate name for a location in the Eden Valley now so famous for Rieslings.
The term Eden Valley might be better referred to as the High Eden Valley as it borders the Adelaide Hills and like that region is part of the elevated Mount Lofty Ranges. It is drained by the north flowing North Para River which forms a narrow, flat, central valley splitting the region into two halves. To the west of the valley the hills rise quickly with peaks to 600 metres while to the east the ridges are lower and the climate drier.
While Mount Eagle wines are sourced from across the Eden Valley most of the vineyards are to the west of the North Para River.
The most famous pioneer of the western ranges was Joseph Gilbert who, beginning in 1847, planted avineyard high up in the Barossa Ranges. Gilbert was an advanced wine pioneer and a noted grower of Riesling. The Eden Valley is classed as cool climate and with its great rival the Clare Valley is established as a premium producer of Rieslings.
