Samuel Stockwell, a butcher and colt breaker with livery stables in Adelaide, purchased 80 acres from George Fife Angas in 1853. This was subdivided into the town of Stockwell in 1856. Further land was acquired for his steam driven flour mill which opened in 1854 on the banks of Stockwell Creek. The flour mill still exists and is used as storage.
By 1856 Stockwell’s village had a population of 150 with many of the settlers of German descent. The town itself expanded south of Duckponds Road, which soon became the main thoroughfare. The intersection of Stockwell Road and Duckponds Road today contains a school and church. Along Duckponds Road are the former Post Office, the flour mill and Stockwell’s most famous building – the hotel which opened in 1867.
