The Harem Range of Layla, Fatima, Rosita and the Sultan, highlights different expressions of Barossa Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. As single varietals or blends, the range made with the view of showing their many different facets.
In Australia, Grenache and Mataro were planted initially to be used in the making of fortified wines. The varieties have a long history of making superior table wines in the warmer wine regions of Europe.
Beginning in the 1950s and 1960s Barossa winemakers began to unmask their exotic-spicy character and flavour mysteries, firstly with Grenache Shiraz Mataro blends and more recently with subtly made varietal Grenache and Mataro wines.
Harem ‘Layla’ Barossa Valley is our classic GSM – Grenache Shiraz and Mataro. The Grenache provides the lifted fragrant aromas and what some people taste as ripe berry and cherry flavours. Shiraz provides the extra weight and depth of flavourwhile the Mataro adds structure and palate length.
Harem Sultan is our 100% Barossa Mataro. It is a brilliant wine not although it does not work every year at the level we demand of the Sultan. The fame of the Sultan Mataro will grow.
Harm Shazada is called by our winemaker “the son of Sultan”.
The Mataro provides the exotic, pungent lifted fragrant aromas in this blend while adding meaty flavours, structure and palate length. Shiraz provides extra weight anddepth of flavour.
Harem Rosita, a blend of Grenache and Cinsault, is a very dry rose showing spicy and savoury characters. Not produced every year because of a difficulty in securing suitable fruit.
